Canoecopia 2010 Comes to a Close

Well, as Rutabaga’s Canoecopia 2010 is about over and what a successful show it has been. The number of people that come to the show is amazaing. I guess with the cabin fever over taking people and the warmer weather upon us, the need to get back out on the water and start padding is overwhelming.

The show for Rec’Repair was great. The interest of people looking for ways to either repair or protect their canoe or kayak brings them to see our material.

Hopefully the attendance of the show and the interest shown in Rec’Repair is an indication that the outdoor industry is looking at a comeback.

Rec’Repair Opens Car Top Carrier Repair Web Store

Customer Review of Rec’Repair Skid Plates

Here’s feedback from a customer on the attributes of Rec’Repair’s Skid Plates:

You sent me a set of skid plates back on 11/18/2008. I also had a chance to meet and thank you at Canoecopia this past March. I got around to putting them on my Souris River Quetico 18.5 Kevlar canoe this fall.

It went very smoothly. I cut the pads down a bit with heavy scissors to get a custom pad and used a heat gun to achieve a great molded fit. I followed the supplied instructions on cleaning, sanding and used a throw away paint brush to spread the adhesive both on the canoe and the molded plate. I then used duct tape to keep pressure on the bond of the skid plate to the canoe. It came out great.

The biggest attribute of your skid plate for me was that it kept the integrity of my Kevlar by adding less than 14oz. for both plates – finished. Now that’s extraordinary when you realize the protection if gives, which is first rate. So in summing it up, it looks great, protects perfectively and keeps the weight of a Kevlar down better than any other plate on the market. I will be spreading the word on this product.

Outdoor Retailer a Success

Outdoor Retailer was a great show for Rec’Repair. The attendance and vendors were down a bit. Whether due to the slow economy or the show being moved deeper into the paddle sports season is not apparent. But some great contacts were made.
We came out of the show with an interested party that might just take Rec’Repair international, offering the canoe and kayak fix to European markets.
Another exciting contact was a car top carrier company, and not the one who recommends their customers to contact us when they damage their carrier.
At the show, we also began showing our improved version of the product: Color Changing Patches!! As the material reaches the optimal temperature, it changes color to white, letting the user know when it’s ready. Then, when it cools, it returns to its original color. No more guessing if the patch is hot enough.
But don’t get too anxious. This color change will not be available until January 2010.
Also, in response to a comment posted: The recommended adhesive for the skid plate application is 3M’s Scotch Weld DP 8005. A suggested online retailer is http://www.ellsworth.com/.

Rec’Repair Suspends Adhesive for Skid Plates

There seems to be some confusion about our supplying the adhesive for Rec’Repair Skid Plates for canoes and kayaks.

Due to the short shelf life of the adhesive that Rec’Repair began supplying, the decision was made to STOP SUPPLYING the adhesive.

Rec’Repair is working on finding a cost-effective adhesive with a longer shelf life, but until that time, we will recommend an adhesive to get the job done.

Rec’Repair fixes Car Top Carriers

I wanted to share a letter that I received about the use of Rec’Repair.

Hi, John. I just wanted to let you know that we finally got around to repairing our pod this weekend (Thule cargo carrier). These car top carriers are quite expensive, and this Rec’Repair order was less than $25.00.

With the ecomomy running a bit slow, we are seeing an increase in people searching for lower cost repair methods for their expensive equipment.

Canoecopia a Success

Just back from Rutabaga’s Canoecopia. The show was a great success. Met with a couple of Rec’Repair sales reps and talked to a lot of customers over the show’s 3 days. There were a lot of customers who have used Rec’Repair to repair their canoes and kayaks, but there were a large number of new customers. Skid plates and the Emergency Kits sold out at the show.

Moreover, the greater success was that we were able to secure 3 new retailers. I would like to welcome Power Outdoors in MI, Andy’s on River Road in Cancan TX, and Lee’s Adventure Sports. Their information can be found on our Where to Buy page.

So we’d like to thank Rutabaga for a successful show and the opportunity to meet their customers and increase our customer base.

Rec’Repair Finally Spreading to Dayton, Ohio

Adventure Summit, hosted by Five Rivers Metro Parks in Dayton, Ohio, was another successful show. We were able to bring paddlers in the area an alternative to repair damaged canoes, kayaks, and car top carriers.

The most exciting part of the show was that, through our local sales rep (jn_lammers@hotmail.com), we were finally able to sign a retailer in the area. We have been working for almost 2 years to make Rec’Repair available in the local area. We will have the information for this local retailer available soon.

Speaking of retailers, it’s time to get ready to head off to Rutabaga’s Canoecopia in Madison, WI in a few weeks. This is our largest, consumer-end show of the year, and Rutabaga has been a retailer of Rec’Repair since we started in the consumer market. Canoecopia last year was our largest single sales event and Rutabaga has seen an increase in customers looking for lower cost repair solutions. in Rutabaga’s continuing effort to keep people on the water, they doubled the order for this season.
