Car Top Carrier Repair FAQ's

  1. What size of Rec’Repair do I need?

We recommend a patch that will cover the damage area and leave approximately one inch of surface area on each side of the damage. This will allow for good adhesion and ensure the watertight seal.

  2. Can I cut the patch?

Yes, most Rec’Repair standard sizes will be larger than what you need. You can cut the patch to size with a standard pair of scissors.

  3. How hot do I need to heat the patch?

Heat the patch until it becomes pliable. This will let you know it has reached the desired temperature of 194°F. Do not exceed 270°F.

  4. How can I heat the patch?

We recommend a standard heat gun. Other heating devices that can be used include a paint stripping gun, a conventional or toaster oven (wrap the patch in foil to protect the paper lining), a microwave (wrap the patch in a paper towel and do not overheat), or a sealed boiling bag. Hair dryers typically do not generate enough heat to activate the patch.

  5. How much damaged area can Rec’Repair cover?

We recommend using Rec’Repair on damaged areas smaller than four inches in diameter (about the size of a baseball).

  6. Do I put the patch on the inside or the outside of the carrier?

We recommend applying Rec’Repair to the outside of your carrier. This prevents water from reaching the adhesive backing.

  7. Can I use the patch on both the inside and outside of the carrier?

Yes, we highly recommend this application for maximum protection from the elements.

  8. If I buy the patch and I don’t use the entire piece, can I use it for other repairs?

Yes, visit the Rec'Repair Blog for more home and travel repair ideas.

  9. How long does the patch last?

Our customers have reported patches that have been in use for as long as two years and that are still holding. However, many factors can affect its performance including correct application of the patch, the condition of the repair surface, and extreme weather conditions.

  10. Where can I purchase Rec’Repair?

Visit our "Where to Buy" page. These retailers carry a variety of standard sizes. For larger sizes, please visit our web store.

  11. How long will it take to receive my Rec’Repair order?

If you order from the Rec’Repair web store, shipping time is approximately three business days. We ship UPS ground. Rush shipping is available. Please call for details.

  12. Can I overlap two patches to cover a long crack in my carrier?

Yes, you can mold two patches to each other. To keep a watertight seal, you will need to ensure that the top piece of material is completely formed to the contours of the bottom piece.

  13. Will the patch stop damage from spreading?

Our customers have reported that after application, spider cracks have stopped spreading.

  14. If I apply the patch wrong, can I remove it and try again?

Rec’Repair is removable, but you cannot reuse the same patch once applied. The patch may be heated and cooled numerous times, but once you apply it, removing it will damage the adhesive.

  15. Is the patch waterproof?

Yes, water will not soak through the patch. The surface of your carrier must be dry and clean before application. Once applied, the adhesive will form a watertight seal.

  16. What colors does the patch come in?

Rec’Repair is available in black or white. It can be painted after application.

  17. Once heated, how long does the patch stay pliable?

The time will vary depending on the ambient air temperature. In temperatures from 40ºF to 70ºF, the patch stays pliable for about one minute. If the patch cools too quickly, simply reheat as needed. You can reheat the patch as many times as needed until you adhere the patch to the surface.

  18. Can I remove the patch at a later date?

Yes, when the patch is cool, begin at one corner with a putty knife and work up the edge, being careful not to scratch the surface of your carrier. When enough of the patch has peeled from the carrier, simply grasp the edge and continue to peel until all of the patch is removed.

  19. Can I use additional sealer?

Yes, but DO NOT apply any additional sealer directly to the adhesive. If desired, you can apply a small amount of silicone sealer directly onto the damaged area of the carrier. Allow this sealer to completely cure, and then apply your Rec’Repair patch. When the patch is completely cooled, if you choose, you can apply sealer around the edges of the patch.
